A lifesaving community

 

Formed in the 1990’s – BCSLSC are affiliated to Surf Lifesaving Great Britain (SLSGB). The club provides voluntary first aid and safety cover at local events as well as beach and water safety advice, re-uniting lost children/people with their families/ groups and information for tourists.

The club is signed off to conduct Level 1 (Community Surveillance) and Level 2 (First Aid Station) patrols. The club is currently developing a plan to start working as a backup service to the RNLI’s Beach Rescue full-time lifeguards each summer. 

The club offers a variety of Lifesaving courses and qualifications through our governing body SLSGB including:

 

Tube Rescuer

 

This award will establish a level of competence to provide supporting water safety as a rescue tube swimmer.

Course Units:

  • Beach Environment
  • Foundation Tube Rescuer

Rescue Board Paddler

This award will establish a level of competence to allow an individual to provide supporting water safety as a rescue board paddler. 

 

Requirements:

Foundation Tube Rescuer course

 

Course Units:

 

  • Beach Environment
  • Foundation Ocean Board Rescuer

Beach Lifeguard Support

Teaches the skills necessary to provide a first aid function to a water safety team including life support and assistance with rescues in shallow water.

 

Requirements:

Be able to run 200m in under 1 minute.

  • Beach Patrolling

  • Working Practices

  • Communications

  • Basic Life Support

  • First Aid

Surf lifesaver

This award enables individuals to provide lifesaving skills when providing safety cover as part of a water safety team or, when working in close proximity to participants.

 

Requirements:

Be able to swim 400m in under 9 minutes and 30 seconds
Be able to run 200m in under 1 min

 

Course Units:

  • All the units found on the Beach Lifeguard support course plus the following:
  • Paediatric Life Support
  • Level 2 Intermediate First Aid
  • Tube Rescuer
  • Rescue Board Paddler
  • Pool Based Practical

Beach Lifeguard

The National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification will provide the learner with an introduction to all elements of beach lifeguard theory, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, pool skills and open water skills. 

 

Requirements:

This qualification requires a 400-meter pool swim in under 8 minutes.

Surf Lifeguard

This course provides the knowledge & skills required to provide professional patrolling and water services, in surf conditions.

 

Requirements:

This qualification requires a 400meter pool swim in under 7 minutes 30 seconds and a 200-meter run in less than 40 secs.

 

Course Units:

  • All the units found on the Beach Lifeguard Course plus the following:
  • Supplementary Oxygen Administration
  • Spinal Extraction
  • Radio Communications

Patrol Captain  

The Patrol Captain Award will provide the learner with the knowledge and skills required to organise, supervise and manage a volunteer led patrol in line with the requirements set out by the SLSGB Lifeguard framework for operation of patrols. 

 

Level 1 Coach

An introduction to the knowledge, skills and understanding of safe and ethical coaching principles in a surf lifesaving environment.

 

Level 2 Coach

Provides the knowledge and skills required to practice as an independent coach focused on developing performance in individuals based on individual needs.

 

Training Assessor

Allows individuals to deliver SLSGB qualifications and awards that they hold or have held themselves.
